Protection diodes at pins 5 & 6 of 74HCO2 help
supply paver ta the circuit, limited to a safe
voltage by a 3.1 Yolt zener diode. Pins 5 & 6
are the serial input to the circuit. The nor
gate reinverts the logic levels vith pins 3, 6,
ond 4. Pin 4 is normally high, When it re-
ceives the start bit, it goes lou, triggering
the frame byte tiser (pin 6 of IC-TLO396), ang
sending bit data ta pin 2 of the serial-to-
poratiel shift register {chip 74HCi6d).

The timing of the frame byte timer consists of
RA and Cl. The timer's output (pin 3) goes high
for 938 micro seconds, and because it is tied to
the clock'’s reset (pin 18), tt allous the clock
to pulse 9 times before being reset after the
frame byte time periad. The clock rate consists
of Ri, RE and CZ. The tiger's output also goes
to pin 3 of 74HCO2's nor gate. This tells the
computer not ta send another byte iapediately.
The last connection ta the timer is (3, C3 with
R? and R43 shape the pulse. The timer's falling
edge is turned into a proper trigger pulse for
TLCSS5, which cutputs a square wave pulse and
gets inverted by nor gate 74HC02 for the printer
to strobe in parallel data.

How let's go back to the clock. The ciock
frequency is 9686 Hz, some as the baud rate.
The clock's output (pin 9) of TLOSS6 starts fron
a lous giving a positive going edge at the be-
ginning of each serial bit, uhich is not desir-
able. So by inverting the clock witha nor gate
frags 74HCG2 chip, ve get a positive going edge
in the middle of each serial bit. Nou ve have
alt the right timing needed for the 74HC164
seriai-to-paraliel shift register chirp.

NGTES:

(1) First adjust RB for 96@@ Hz.

Vithout the RX¥D Cpin 3) on serial ft connected,
run a juap vire from +5 volts to junction O1,
02. Connect a frequency meter to pin 9 of IC-Z.
Adjust RB for 96086 Hz. Go NOT change this once
it's adjusted. Disconnect jumper, connect R#D.

(2) Adjust RA for frame byte timing.

With circuit connected tao the QL ond the
printer, set RA to its aid adjustment. Send
about 6 lines of text to the printer using a
vord processor or a basic pregras loop. fis the

printer is printing, adjust RA for correct

characters. Depending on your printers buffer
size, the amount of delay betueen adjusting RA
and seeing the results vill vary, so it may be
advisable to adjust RA betuveen printings. If you
find that there is a range of adjustments that
uork, set RA at mid point of that range.

to run the curcuit from alt of the serial lines
by use of diodes at each line, like “Di, 02° and

"13, 04° are hooked up. You need to use the CTS,
OTR, and/or OSR, RTS. So it appears that it
needs no pover line, This vill work on other
serial ports of other computers as vell.

it (Larken and JLO, we haven't

per track disks atl using
AaigaDos 1.3 with 512 byte
sectors)..

can copy QL disks to MSDOS
disks and back, al] on the OL
drives..

for the first tise today)..

JLO disks on the QL..

Our next project will be to try
to write Larken and JLO disks
and then we can return your

our standard is 64 colusns for
half page, so it say get a
little saall when we reduce it
to fit. If it had been on
NS(PC)-DOS disk we could have
changed the sargins to 64
coluen to fit our standard half
page size without retyping it

We began work on the QL
PROCedure to Search the SLIX
Persanent Data Base on 890107..

The steps we are using aret;..

1. Sort directories
chroestogtcalty into LIFO (ast
in, first out) order,
2. Sort files in each
into LIFO order..

3. Create Keyword (words that
are capitalized) Array fros
first file with keyword Address

(nuaber of bytes froa front of

tile)..

4. Sort keywords (this takes
about | hour for a S5kbyte
(7000 word) file {ScB812 lis)
using a ’Shell’ sort in

" erBASIC).

Typing in a few letters and
pressing ‘enter’ provides us
with a Iist of keywords 4
starting with those letters (in
alphebetical order) with the
cursor positioned on the first
keyword... ae

If we ‘enter’ a string which is
not in the keyword table, the
"srch’ procedure begins a
linear search thru the data
base and ateprays the first
occurrence of the string..

The string is added to the key
word table and a search for
additional occurrences is
carried out as a seperate
*background’ task..

We can use the up/down, .

right/lett arrows ‘or aouse) to
position the cursor on the
desired keyword..

Pressing ‘space’ shows us the
first record containing the
keyword with a flashing cursor
on the keyword..

Each tiee we select a keyword, a
bit is ‘pushed’ onto the
frequency field so that if we
ever want to reduce the size of
the keyword table, we can
delete infrequently used
keywords...

Since this entire procedure is
written in SuperBASIC, it is
easy for the user to eodify it
to search for records with
aultiple keywords and direct
the output to a file instead
of, or in addition to, the
SCreeN..

‘In May 1984 issue of Scientific Aserican, A. K. Dewdney in his
; Coaputer Recreations coluan decribes a qane called Core War.

destroy each other. They do this by soaehow stopping the other

prograa from running. They can put bad data in the aiddle of

|MARS is a computer sisulation of a coaputer. It uses an array
| of strings to siaulate aesory spaces and executes prograas that

run in these spaces. The poe ae executes one line of code
from one Redcode prograa and then another line froa the other.

is used by the prograsp to know the end of your prograe when
reading it in from the data statesents..

All of the addresses in Redcode are relative. PC is the Prooras

Counter, this controls what Tine NARS is executing. NOV 0
aeans to put the contents of address PC+0 {in other words the
current line) and put it in address PC+! (the next line),
Negative nuabers are allowed to aean addresses before the PC..

To run the prograa, bee the two programs you want into the data)
stateaents in lines 2000 (prog #1) and 3000 (prog #2). Then |
RUN the progras. As each Jine of code is executed it is =—s_|
printed out on the screen along with the address at which it is:
at. This way you can the progress of the two prograss.. |

Also included in the prograe is a procedure called list_aeaory.
This procedure copies out the contents of the aeaory array to
the screen. This way you can see what is in seaory..

There is a constant called top_aea. This defines how big the
aeaory array is. 4 you find eeaory too saall, just increase
this constant... :

Redcode does sake provisions for direct and indirect addressing.

A @ before a nuaber is direct addressing and an @ is used for

indirect. MOV #0 1 seans to put the nuaber 0 in the address
1+PC. In indirect the coasands::..

seans to put the contents of address O+PC and store it at the
address pointed at by the nuaber at PC-1 (the previous line),
MARS goes and gets the nusber stored at PC-! and finds 20, it
then puts the data at that address, PC+20..

Indirect addressing say be used for both A and B arguesents
direct say be used for A, but direct say only be used for
with the CHP cossand. All other cossands aay not use direct
addressing of B..

1 aust spend a sinute and talk about the DAT comaand. The

comsand itsel# does not execute, but it tells MARS that data is;

stored at this address. DAT stateaents are used siailarly to
variables. If you are going to add the contents of two
addresses then they aust be DAT statements. If a nuaber is
stored in an address that is not preceded by DAT it is
considered a bug and the prograa boabs out..

The MOV and DAT comands interact different together. If you
NOV $0 20 and address PC+20 is a DAT statement the 20 is added
so that at PC#20 is stored DAT 0. But if PC#20 is not a data
statesent then just 0 is stored at PC+20. This is used to put
"bombs" in programs. If you can drop a 0 in the aiddle of the
other progras then NARS will halt when it gets to that line
causing the other prograa to crash..
